The Burnet High School girls basketball team went 2-0 Dec. 28 to begin the Leander Glenn tournament.

The Lady Dawgs (13-4) defeated Leander High 46-22 and Pflugerville Weiss 45-24 to extend their winning streak to seven.

Head coach Rick Gates noted the team had a practice Dec. 27 in preparation for the tournament.

“They were doing drills and trying to shake the rust off,” he said. “We’re still rusty, but I feel like we played well.”

Giving up no more than 24 points in each game means the opponents didn’t score more than six in a single quarter, which speaks volumes about Burnet’s ability to generate stops.

“We ran our stuff pretty well, I thought we rebounded pretty well,” the coach said. “Our shooting will come back around. In my opinion, you’re going to be rusty coming off a break. I’m looking for us to shoot it better.”

His team displayed two important traits that pave the way to success.

“I felt like we were pretty good as far as energy level and conditioning,” he said. “In non-district (play), I’m more liberal in my substitutions. I think that helps give everybody minutes.”

Though the tournament finishes Dec. 29, the reason for it will start in earnest Jan. 6 when the Lady Dawgs travel to Marble Falls to begin District 24-4A play.

“What determines a team and a program is district play and the playoffs,” Gates said. “I tell the girls all the time I probably don’t praise them enough. I look at what can I do to help them improve? What can we do better? That’s what teams have to do. It’s hard to win, but that’s the goal. They know their roles. It’s a joy to coach these kids.”
